Go behind the scenes of Garden Island with the Naval Historical Society of Australia.

Rarely seen, the heritage-listed buildings include the naval chapel, barracks, the original naval store & other British Admiralty buildings (all pre 1890s) as well as the 1896 boatshed. Tour the grounds learning about their history while enjoying the magnificent views across Sydney harbour from the old Signal Station.

Plus admire the working Captain Cook graving dock (completed in 1945) and reflect on the site where 21 lives on the HMAS Kuttabul were lost to a midget submarine attack in 1942.

The tour includes:

- a brief overview of warships currently berthed

- a brief description of the tunnel system under the northern hill

- details of the massive infrastructure project undertaken in the 1940’s to extend the island’s area in conjunction with building the Captain Cook Graving Dock.

Don't miss this fascinating look into Sydney's maritime heritage!

Please note the walking part of the tour will take approx. two hours and there are numerous stairs to navigate, including up to the signal station. After the tour we enjoy a light morning tea.
